 “BRINGING NORWOOD BACK TO STEAM”

The History

No 77 ‘Norwood’, an RSH Saddle tank locomotive was the last working Steam Locomotive in the North East of England not in preservation, so it is an important part of our heritage. Norwood was ordered by Priestman Collieries Order N61, on the 22nd January 1947 and built to their following requirements at Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn Ltd. It was exhibited at the Stephenson Centenary Exhibition at Manors Station in August 1948, when it was painted black with red lining.

‘NCB’ was in 9” gold lettering on the saddle tank with ‘Norwood’ in 2” gold letters on the cab side. Norwood spent its working life prior to preservation at the Coke Works at Dunston. Surviving onsite until construction and preparation commenced for the garden festival that took place in 1990.

Norwood has not steamed in preservation but restoration is advancing on the locomotive now based at Locomotion Shildon. The next key step is the refurbishment of the boiler and we are actively fundraising to achieve this milestone.

DLPG has successfully raised funds for a large number of the missing components, supported by successful grant applications from the Banks Foundation and the Angel Trust. We are now in the process of applying for further grants to aid with the huge costs of renovating the locomotive which, once completed, will run on heritage railways around the UK.

Fundraising

DLPG are raising funds in many ways. We have an EBay Charity shop. We sell new and second hand model railway items including Hornby, Accurascale, Dapol, Oxford Rails and many more. We constantly add new items so please save us as one of your favourite sellers. Follow the link https://charity.ebay.co.uk/charity/Durham-Locomotive-Preservation-Group/3189078

We are registered with the Pay Pal Giving Fund and we also receive gift aid on eligible donations. This is linked to EBay therefore sellers can also chose to donate a proportion of their sales to the group, saving on seller fees and the group will also receive gift aid through the fund.

We have recently established the smokebox fund aiming to raise £6000 toward its essential replacement. More information can be found on our Facebook page with a link to our donation page and the latest progress. All donations are welcome, every penny helps!

DLPG are also registered with Easyfundraising. When shopping with the likes of EBay, Amazon, Just Eat, Compare the Market Insurance and so much more. Donations are provided to the group if chosen as your selected charity. It costs you nothing and you simply need to shop through their mobile app or website. Saturdays working party, we lift the engine up and lined the wheels up to put the front connecting rods on.
